Important Update for Directors: Companies House Identity Verification Requirements

As part of the Government’s drive to increase corporate transparency and prevent economic crime, Companies House identity verification will soon become a legal requirement for all company directors and people with significant control (PSCs).

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, all directors and PSCs must verify their identity with Companies House. The requirement becomes mandatory from autumn 2025, but Companies House is already sending emails to directors and agents encouraging early action.

Why Is Identity Verification Being Introduced?

The goal is to ensure that individuals responsible for UK companies are genuine, reducing opportunities for fraudulent activities. This important step helps protect the integrity of the UK business register and builds trust in the corporate system.

How to Verify Your Identity with Companies House

There are three ways to complete your Companies House identity verification:

  1. Online using GOV.UK One Login – You’ll need to upload identification documents such as a passport or driver’s licence.
  2. In-person at selected UK Post Offices – For UK residents, after completing the online process to confirm eligibility.
  3. Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – Such as SeavorChartered, who can complete the identity verification process on your behalf.

Once verified, you will receive a Companies House personal code unique to you. This code will later be linked to your company record when the system fully rolls out in autumn 2025.

Why Act Now?

Although the requirement is not yet mandatory, acting early helps avoid delays or potential complications. Companies House has made it clear that directors who fail to verify their identity on time will not be able to file critical documents like the annual Confirmation Statement. This could lead to financial penalties and being blocked from forming new companies.

Check Your Personal Details

Before starting the identity verification process, ensure Companies House has accurate information about you—including your date of birth. Mismatches could cause verification delays or rejection.
