Helping Clients Work Smarter: Exploring the Latest Dext Features with Freddie

At SeavorChartered, we are always on the lookout for tools that make life easier for our clients. Cloud accounting software has transformed how small businesses manage their finances — and one of the platforms leading the way is Dext (formerly Receipt Bank).

To keep on top of the latest updates our team recently took part in a session with Freddie from the Dext team. He gave us an exclusive walkthrough of their newest Dext features — and we are genuinely excited by the impact these can have for owner-managed businesses.

In this blog, we will share our takeaways from the session, the benefits of these new features, and how you can take full advantage of them. If you are already using Dext, or you are curious about whether it’s right for your business, read on — this could really help streamline your processes.

Why Dext is Still One of the Best Tools for Small Businesses

Dext integrates seamlessly with Xero, QuickBooks, and other cloud platforms, giving business owners and accountants more accurate data, faster. It’s well-known for its powerful automation features — but the platform is evolving beyond just receipt scanning.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s new:

1. Invoice Approvals – Better Controls, Less Risk

One of the most requested upgrades is now live — invoice approvals.

If your business has multiple team members submitting or authorising invoices, this new feature introduces a clear and structured approval workflow. Before any invoice is published to your accounting software or paid, it can be reviewed and approved by the right person. This gives you more control, reduces mistakes, and helps prevent unauthorised payments.

Why it matters: This is especially useful for growing businesses or those with finance teams. It also provides a clearer audit trail, which is always helpful when it comes to year-end or dealing with HMRC.

2. Mileage Tracking – Simple, Compliant Journey Logging

Dext now includes a built-in mileage tracking tool — a major plus for sole traders and directors who use their personal car for business travel.

Users can record mileage directly within the app, making it easier to claim accurate expenses without spreadsheets or manual logs. Dext automatically calculates the correct rate and attaches the journey to the relevant business.

Why it matters: Accurate mileage records are vital for staying HMRC-compliant. This feature makes it quick and stress-free to record each journey and ensure it’s reimbursed or deducted correctly.

3. Dextension – The Browser Tool You Didn’t Know You Needed

Freddie also introduced us to Dextension, Dext’s browser extension that allows you to send invoices, receipts, and files directly from your browser into Dext — no downloading, emailing or uploading required.

This is especially handy for collecting invoices from supplier portals, online receipts, or even screen-grabbed PDFs. One click and it’s done.

Why it matters: Time-saving and seamless, Dextension is a great tool for any business that deals with lots of digital paperwork and wants a smarter workflow.

4. Dext Solo – Perfect for Freelancers, Sole Traders and Landlords

Designed for the self-employed, Dext Solo is a simpler version of the full platform. It allows freelancers and sole traders to record income and expenses easily, without needing to invest in full-scale accounting software.

It keeps digital records in line with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements and makes it easy to hand over clean data to your accountant at the year-end.

Why it matters: Many small businesses don’t need complex systems. Dext Solo offers a cost-effective and user-friendly solution for those who just want the basics done well.

Why This Matters for Our Clients

All these updates focus on one thing — making finance management easier and more efficient for business owners.

Whether you are already using Dext or haven’t yet explored its potential, these features can help save time, reduce stress, and provide better visibility over your numbers. As accountants, our job is to help you work smarter, not harder — and tools like Dext make that possible.
