HMRC make U-Turn on proposed helpline cuts less than 24 hours after announcement made.
Tuesday 19 March HMRC announced decision to make changes to the Self-Assessment, VAT and PAYE Helplines. This included a 6-month Self-Assessment helpline closure from April 2024 to September 2024.
Wednesday 20 March this announcement was reversed with any guidance published by HMRC removed.
A statement from the Treasury Committee spoke out to say ‘Planned changes to the operations of HMRC’s phone line have been mismanaged from the beginning, Questions still remain over the extent to which the department are prioritising its own needs over those of law-abiding and vulnerable taxpayers’
This U-Turn move is the second in a matter of weeks following the decision to reverse the guidance that classed double-cab pickups as cars rather than vans.
